Reduce Power Consumption in Your Grow Room: Tips & Monthly Calculation
Growing indoors gives you full control, but it can get expensive if you’re not careful with energy use. Between lights, fans, extraction, and sometimes AC, your power bill can skyrocket. Here are a few practical tips to lower your energy consumption—without compromising your yield—and a simple way to calculate your monthly electricity costs.
Tip #1: Lower light intensity during veg
For a 1.20 m x 1.20 m area, 300 watts is more than enough for healthy growth—as long as your VPD and irrigation strategy are dialed in. There’s no need to blast full power during veg. Lowering wattage cuts costs and reduces heat stress.
Tip #2: Run 12/12 light cycle during veg with a nighttime flash
Instead of 18 or 24 hours of light, run your veg cycle on 12 hours of full light, followed by a 30-watt neon or LED for the remaining 12 hours to prevent flowering. This “flash” technique is proven and saves a lot of energy.
Tip #3: Alternate multiple lights
If you use multiple lights, run them in shifts—one on for 12 hours, then off while the other runs. This technique can cut your lighting energy costs in half.
Monthly cost formula:
kWh price x hours/day x lamp power (in kWh) x days/month
Example:
0.23 $ x 18 h x 0.3 kWh x 31 = 38.43 $/month
